Headline: Dr. Al-Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Chairman of the Federal Transport Authority – Land & Maritime (FTA), and his delegation conducted a meeting with Jose Mwara, Director General of the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds)
HE Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Balheif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Chairman of the Federal Transport Authority – Land & Maritime (FTA), and his accompanying delegation held a meeting with Mr. Jose Mwara, Director General of the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds) on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the IOPC Funds' establishment.
The meeting discussed the effective role played by the IOPC Funds in compensations related to oil pollution incidents caused by ships and the resulting losses and negative effects on human beings and the marine environment; the matter that requires joint efforts at national, regional and international levels.
HE Al Nuaimi stressed the importance of cooperation and partnership between the UAE and the IOPC Funds, which lasted for more than 35 years, in order to achieve the IOPC Funds' objectives. He also stressed the importance of holding workshops for the purpose of consultation, training, qualification, expertise exchange and amending relevant legislations towards enhancing maritime environmental protection.
On the other hand, Mr. Jose expressed his thanks and gratitude to HE Al-Nuaimi for his visit, stressing that the IOPC Funds' management always seeks through its member states to develop legal systems at the international level and help countries understand the conventions related to the work of the IOPC Funds in order to enact appropriate national legislation.
Mr. Jose also praised the active and positive role of the UAE through its membership in the Executive Committee of the IOPC Funds (1992), the committee that deals with oil pollution incidents and damages and approves compensation. It is noteworthy to mention that IOPC Funds' membership now includes 115 member states, including the UAE which recently won a seat in the Executive Committee of the IOPC Funds.
