HE Dr. Abdullah Belheif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Transport Authority - Land & Maritime (FTA), arrives at Geneva to participate in the 81st session of the Committee on Land Transport of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), which will be held from 19 to 22 February 2019.
The participation came in response to an invitation received by HE the Minister from the Under-Secretary-General of the UNECE. The UAE delegation included representatives of the FTA and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development. It is noteworthy to mention that the UNECE's Land Transport Committee is one of the most active bodies to develop strategies, policies and regulations for land, river and channels transport on a global scale, and have held annual meetings since 1947.
The meeting will discuss a number of issues of global importance, primarily traffic safety issues (including the establishment of the United Nations Traffic Safety Fund), automation, intelligent transportation systems, digitalization and the use of electronic documents (including e-tiers, international road transport e-nodes, transport of hazardous materials, and traffic facilitation at border crossings.
HE Dr. Abdalla Balheif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development, said in his statement: "We consider this invitation a valuable opportunity to participate for the second year in a row in the work of this Committee, which plays a pivotal role in the organization and development of road transport in general, and to support the Commission's direction towards effective participation of other countries outside Europe in the activities of the Committee in particular to enable them to participate actively in the Policies and programs to improve traffic safety around the world and to develop harmonized global regulatory frameworks to regulate and enable all-vehicle driving techniques to meet the hopes for a major leap in transport and the many areas affected by it safety, infrastructure and urban planning, enable different segments of society to move more easily, and invest resources."
